1. Overview
LiveStream Translator ("the extension") is a free Chrome extension that captures audio from the browser tab you choose and shows live translated captions, with optional spoken voiceover. This policy explains what data the extension handles and how. The extension has no accounts, and the developer does not operate a server that receives your data.
2. Information the extension handles
- Groq API key: you enter your own Groq API key. It is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's extension storage. It is not sent to the developer.
- Tab audio: when you click Start Translation, the extension captures the audio of the current tab. Capture runs only while a session is active.
- Settings: preferences such as target language, captions on or off, and voiceover on or off are stored locally in your browser.
3. How your data is used
- Audio from the tab is sent from your browser directly to the Groq API, using your own API key, to transcribe and translate speech into captions.
- If you enable voiceover, the translated text is spoken aloud.
- The extension does not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose other than providing translation and captions.
4. Data sharing
- The only third party that receives data is Groq, because you provide your own Groq API key and audio is sent to Groq for processing. Groq's handling of that data is governed by Groq's own terms and privacy policy.
- We do not sell or transfer user data to other third parties, and we do not use or transfer user data for purposes unrelated to the extension's single purpose, or to determine creditworthiness or for lending.
5. Data storage and retention
The developer does not store your audio, transcripts, translations, or API key. Settings and the API key remain in your browser until you remove them or uninstall the extension.
6. Analytics and tracking
The extension does not include analytics, advertising, or tracking.
7. Permissions
Each permission is used only for the part of the extension it is needed for:
- tabCapture and activeTab: to capture audio from the tab you start translation on, only after you click Start.
- offscreen: to process the captured audio stream and play optional voiceover.
- scripting: to show the caption overlay on the tab.
- storage: to save your API key and settings locally.
- Host access: to reach the Groq API and display captions on the pages where you start translation.
- Remote code: the extension does not load or run remotely hosted code. All code ships in the extension package.
8. Your choices and control
- You can delete your API key from the extension settings at any time.
- You can stop translation at any time, which ends audio capture.
- Uninstalling the extension removes all locally stored data.
- You can revoke your Groq API key in the Groq console.
9. Children's privacy
The extension is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.
